How digital engagement supercharges weight loss


New findings from Voy’s peer-reviewed, published research on how digital behaviour change can improve weight loss outcomes, published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research.

Introduction

Obesity is one of the most pressing global health challenges, affecting millions of people worldwide. This study, conducted in collaboration with Imperial College London, investigated how engaging with Voy's digital weight management platform, combined with medications, can significantly enhance weight loss outcomes. This research has been peer-reviewed and published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research (JMIR).

By analysing real-world data from thousands of participants, we uncover the powerful role of digital tools in promoting sustainable health behaviours. We define engaged as those that take our weight loss medications and are using the Voy app, along with Voy’s behavioural change coaches.

Process

This study included data from almost 58,000 participants who enrolled in the Voy digital health platform between February 2023 and August 2024. Participants were aged 18–75 years, had a body mass index (BMI) of ≥30 or ≥27.5 kg/m² with comorbidities, and received either Mounjaro, Wegovy or Ozempic as part of their weight management program. Engagement was defined by factors such as attendance at coaching sessions, frequency of app usage, and regular weight tracking. Participants were divided into “engaged” and “non-engaged” groups based on these metrics. Weight loss outcomes were tracked over 5 months. Significant insights emerged: participants with higher engagement levels consistently correlated with better weight loss outcomes.

Key Findings

Engaged participants achieved up to 53% greater weight loss in just 4 months compared to non-engaged participants. Not only that, but findings also showed that:


• Engaged individuals were more likely to achieve clinically significant weight loss thresholds, such as ≥5%, ≥10%, and ≥15%. Each of these thresholds are decreasing your risk of future disease and complications considerably.


• Digital engagement fostered adherence to medication use, self-monitoring, and goal-setting behaviours.


• Behavioural coaching and app interactions significantly accelerated progress toward weight loss goals.


• Our analysis revealed that engaged participants achieved milestones faster than their non-engaged counterparts.

These findings demonstrate the transformative potential of combining digital behavioural support with pharmacotherapy for obesity management. For individuals struggling with weight loss, engaging with platforms like Voy can make a measurable difference. By fostering consistent self-monitoring, personalised coaching, and adherence to treatment protocols, digital tools help users achieve their health goals faster and more sustainably. This study reinforces the importance of integrating technology into modern healthcare solutions to improve outcomes and accessibility.

The study highlights the synergy between weight loss medication and digital engagement, offering a groundbreaking approach to obesity management. By combining these strategies, individuals can achieve clinically significant weight loss, paving the way for healthier lives and improved well-being.
