The comparison trap

The comparison trap: How measuring your weight loss against others can hold you back

With more and more people on a GLP-1 journey, it’s becoming even easier to compare our progress with others, but does that actually help? Let’s get into it!

Mindset & Habits

When is it helpful to compare, and when does it hold you back?

It’s natural to compare your progress to someone else’s, especially when you’re on a similar path. A little healthy competition can be motivating, keep you accountable, and even enhance weight-loss results, according to some studies. But constant comparison can backfire.

When someone else’s progress feels faster or more dramatic, your focus can shift from your own journey to theirs. That’s when you might risk pushing yourself too hard, losing motivation, or even giving up altogether if you’re not keeping pace.

The truth is: our bodies, circumstances, and needs are different. What works for one person might not work for you, and that’s okay.

So what’s the answer? Tune back into your path, and make sustainable progress your priority.

Treatment Specialist's Note“Try to catch yourself in those moments of comparison and ask instead: what’s one thing I can do today that supports my goals and feels achievable for me?” – Bethany Tripp | Treatment Specialist at Voy

Building your own confidence

Have you ever felt discouraged because someone else hit their goal faster? That’s the power of comparison—it can turn a perfectly good pace into a source of self-doubt. But here’s the thing: going at your own pace helps you build confidence from the inside out.

Small, realistic wins not only make you feel accomplished, they also reinforce your belief that you can do this. Unlike comparison, which can make you feel behind or “not good enough,” steady progress fuels positive momentum.

And the more consistent you are with your own micro wins, the more confident you’ll feel and the more likely you are to stick with it.

You only hear the wins

Often, we only tell people about things when they are going right, so you don’t hear the week they may have gained weight or had a dip in their motivation.

Likewise, you don’t always know how someone is achieving the results they are. If someone's doing something unhealthy to lose weight rapidly, they aren’t generally going to tell you, and if someone is doing something unsustainable, it’s not likely that progress is going to last.

Voy's approach: Microhabits

So, how do we shift away from comparison and back toward personal progress? Microhabits.

Microhabits are small, manageable changes that feel achievable and personal. They meet you where you are and can be easily adjusted over time.

You might have noticed how much energy your friend has, and they’ve shared that they’re hitting the gym three times a week. Right now, that might feel like a lot for you and squeezing it in just isn’t realistic.

So, how can we help you get that same boost of movement and energy, but in a way that actually works for your life? Maybe it’s a quick 10-minute workout at home each day, or joining one group session a week if that feels more your style.

The key is finding something that feels doable and enjoyable for you.

That’s the beauty of microhabits: they focus on what you can do, not what someone else is doing. Even small steps, done consistently, will take you further than trying to match someone else’s pace. Consistency always beats intensity when it comes to long-term change.

Treatment Specialist's Note“Microhabits remind us that we don’t have to match anyone else's pace—we just need to keep taking steps forward.” – Bethany Tripp | Treatment Specialist at Voy
